Topic > Analysis of Half of a Yellow Sun - 1943

This film is the only film listed where a black African directed the film. Based on the novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, it tells the lives of Olanna and Kainene, wealthy Nigerian twins who face the social and political struggle of what is happening in their country; the Igbo people refuse to coincide with the Hausas people within the country (History.com Staff, 2009). The film shows various struggles shared by all the cast members; the adultery that both Olanna and her husband, Odenigbo, deal with, the love that Kainene gains for Richard, a white English writer. While the film emphasizes the great personal conflict of each of these characters, there is also the ongoing political conflict of the Nigerian Civil War which has a great impact on the twins' lives. This film is particularly important because it shows the class contrast within the Nigerian community, a clear indicator of development; Africans are no longer seen as poor and inferior. Olabanji Akinola (2013) explains that this is a great development because “through films, stereotypes that Nigerians are often victims of can be shattered and new images presented through Nollywood”
