Milgram discovered that the more physical, visual, or auditory interaction there was between participants (teachers) and confederates (students), the less likely they were to rise to the highest level of shock (Kokot, 2001). Furthermore, when the experimenters left the room, participants were less likely to comply (Kokot, 2001). This shows that people have pressure to conform when they interact more with experimenters and less with confederates. Many experimenters have tried to replicate Milgram's studies. Different results have been found, and most results from replicate experiments are still consistent with Milgram's results.
