Feeding a Hungry ChildWhen we turn 11, barely old enough to understand anything in life, we ask our parents for a cell phone, not just a cell phone but the latest iPhone that just came out. And as good parents who want to be seen by our children, let's go ahead and spend that $700 dollars and buy them the latest iPhone, without thinking about what an 11 year old needs a phone for. At 16 we ask for our first car, not just any car; we ask for a Mercedes or an Audi so when we drive down the street our neighbors don't look down on us. Again, as average, middle-class Orange County parents, we don't want our children to be excluded from society, nor do we want to seem like we can't afford what John's father can do. We are just average middle class Americans who work hard to stay in line with society and enjoy what we have worked hard for for several years of our lives. On the other side of the world that we are not aware of, there are people dying of disease and starvation. Afghanistan is one of those countries where a child dies every 5 seconds due to hunger, not just dying but starving. A person in Afghanistan would do anything to feed their family, even if it meant selling one family member to feed the rest. In the villages of Afghanistan, a 6-year-old child is sold by his own parents to a rich old man to feed the rest of the family. This shows the desperate need they have for something so simple that we in America take for granted. Our donations can make a big difference compared to other countries, even if they seem small to us. We might think that our $200 a month won't help feed all the hungry children or cure all the sick children, but if everyone did their part we could make a vision... in the middle of a sheet of paper... a more small portion which can be of great help to people from other countries too. Again, spending money to indulge our vices or entertain ourselves is good, but damaging our health is a wasteful way to spend our hard-earned money. According to the 24/7 Wall Street Journal, the average American spends about 10% of his income smoking just one. packing a day that costs about $4,000 a year. This money spent is not only wasteful but also harmful to us as a country and as individuals. Smoking is known to be the number one cause of cancer and many other diseases, so smoking not only harms us as individuals, but also increases healthcare prices, harming us all. Just by reducing smoking or daily alcohol consumption we can save over 4,000 dollars a year, which imagines how many lives we can save, how many diseases we can cure and how many smiles we can put on a child's face..
