Witch hunts have been around for a long time and we as a society are still ignoring them as such. A witch hunt can be defined as a real persecution of people, in particular women suspected of practicing magical arts. Salem was a normal town before the "She's a witch" epidemic in 1692. When there are things that we ourselves cannot explain because we don't know what they are and we fear them. Naturally as human beings we tend to believe or convince ourselves that those things are not good. Then we have to blame those “bad things” on people but what is done instead is blaming others. Once people are blamed, two things happen; the first group of people blames others to get out of trouble, as was mainly done in Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", while the second group of people chooses to live with the guilt while trying to get rid of it and, similar in modern hunting gay, as you can see, the witch hunt begins with fear. Fear of the unknown is probably the biggest fear people have. This type of fear starts every witch hunt as people decide to pre-judge those things they don't know by stereotyping them as bad things. Another type of fear that appears in real life and in "The Crucible" is the fear of danger. In the case of 'The Crucible', it all started with the fear of being in danger. In the case of modern hunting, this type of fear plays a fundamental role. The gay hunt began with the myth and lies that being gay was a mental illness and many others, which of course are big lies. In "The Crucible" the fear of being in danger manifests itself when Abigail and the rest of the girls, after being caught dancing in the forest, decide to blame people instead of taking responsibility. ' I saw Sarah Good with that...... middle of paper...... carried the blame trying to get rid of it but was killed. In conclusion it can be said that the whole idea of witch hunts is based on three things: fear, beliefs/convictions and guilt. We are afraid and therefore we stereotype. When we create stereotypes, we believe and then we go beyond and transform those beliefs into beliefs that make us act and blame to save ourselves. The Salem witch hunts, like the modern ones, are based on simple claims that spiral out of control. It's like a snowball, it starts out very small and as people add to it it gets bigger and bigger and sweeps away everything in its path. People don't really realize how much they contribute to the lies and blame becoming bigger until it hits them in the face. Therefore it can be said that people must consider what they do and must take responsibility for their actions.
