Those Who Walk Away from the OmelasIntroductionIn this science fiction story, LeGuin introduces us to a utopian society characterized by mere beauty and an enchanting, harmonious environment. The city is described as a luminous tower by the sea. The author emphasizes its pristine and natural environment, with its large water meadow and its green field. The existence of its people, both young and old, is one of harmony and peace. The children run naked to symbolize their innocence and that of the city. Although much emphasis is placed on the natural beauty of the people of Omela and its environment, many things remain that show its darker side which is hidden by the innocence of children until they reach the age of 10 (Le, Guin, 65). This is in total contrast to the beautiful display of the city and its harmony. It points to a cruel society that exposes a year-old child to unnatural suffering because of the utopian belief that the city's success is tied to the child's suffering.
