In most cases there is a lack of professionals such as doctors and psychiatrists available. This ultimately means that prisoners have a minimal chance of receiving the help they need. Even if prisoners are convicts who have broken the law, they are still human beings "with organs that fail and extremities that break" and should be treated as such (Mayeux). Lack of essential staff also prevents prisons from achieving their correctional goal. Prisons are intended to protect citizens from criminals, but they are also intended to function as correctional facilities that rehabilitate inmates and prepare them for life after prison. However, overcrowding hinders this goal by sacrificing many of the needs that prisoners must have. It is therefore essential to maintain an environment that is conducive to reform and contributes to the realization of the process
