Being an individualistic state, the government has many limited powers over its people and it is because of the way the government is structured and its past history. Texas likes to be known as independent and not as reliant on the government as in the past. In Texas it is believed that people should receive help from the private sector rather than from the government bureaucracy. (Garden page 27). Businesses in Texas are booming and with that more conservative Republicans have come to power. One example is lowering taxes, which would benefit businesses but affect citizens by not offering government programs or local assistance. Another example would be the salaries of Texas legislators. Lawmakers don't get paid much, only about $7,200 a year, which shows that Texas doesn't want them involved. (Garden pg. 169) Although Texas is known for being an individualistic state, it has also mixed in bits and pieces of other cultures. Traditionalist culture preserves the status quo. The Texans have made many changes over time but still reserve many ways. For example in our textbook, “Texas was one of the last states to introduce legalized gambling” (Giardino p. 28), as well as trying to keep minorities from voting by imposing poll taxes and white primaries that they were eventually abolished. These are the key patterns of the conservative way of Texans. The moralistic culture is one that could be integrated into every state. It
