When faced with death or admitting to dealings with the Devil, Proctor decides to die to keep his name clean of the dirty stigma of witchcraft. In the last moments of his life he says “I think I see a shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner, but white enough to keep it away from dogs like that. Don't give them tears! Tears make them happy! Show honor now, show them a heart of stone and sink them with it!” (Miller, 144). Proctor dies with honor and integrity, clearing his troubled conscience and leaving him at peace
