Topic > Beowulf is a true epic - 1225

An epic is defined as a long narrative poem that retells the story of a hero. Stories throughout history have shown us many things about the culture and people of that time. While many stories have heroes and morals, there remains something much more that distinguishes an epic from the rest of literature. “Beowolf” is an extraordinary story that shows all aspects of a true epic poem. Although many things define an epic poem, one very important aspect is that the hero of the story identifies with the society, the hero Beowulf clearly identifies with both Danish and Greek people. Beowulf, the main character of the story, is the archetypal hero. He is a legendary character who embodies the goals and virtues of an entire nation or culture. He is loved by his followers and has earned their respect through his actions. 'Hrothgar replied, protector of the Danes: 'Beowulf, you have come to us in friendship...' (190-191). When Beowulf first arrives at Harot Hall, he is greeted by Hrothgar and the many men who seek his help against the monster Grendel. He brings together both Geats and Danes and represents the Danes in the best possible way. “The Danes and the visiting Geats celebrated as one, drank and rejoiced” (231-232). He represented his fellow Geats and at the same time took on the goals and virtues of the Danes by taking on the task of fighting the dragon and Grendel who threatened and killed many Danes. Beowulf's courageous lifestyle allowed him to undertake this task. He was extremely determined to create a safe environment for his people, because of this he was able to achieve the goal of his people, safety. In addition to showing everything a true epic hero must do, Beowulf accomplishes many great feats in battle, which only adds to his heroism... middle of paper... makes a good impression. In many ways the author speaks well of Beowulf, portraying him as a great hero each, but at the same time there is a negative feeling coming from others. The author's partial point of view and feelings towards a certain character remain yet another aspect of a true epic. The hero, setting, language and overall tone of the story are very important, "Beowolf" portrays them in the same way any epic should. Beowulf, the main character, is very important because he does not appear in any other Anglo-Saxon literature. Many of his traits that constitute him as an epic hero contribute to the overall feel of the epic proper in which this story is set. “Beowolf” is a powerful epic poem that will forever be remembered as the archetypal epic poem.
