Topic > Langston Hughes' symbolism in I Too, Sing America?

In this poem I don't think the speaker is Langston Hughes, the speaker could be anyone. This poem asks what happens to dreams. The speaker has many ideas in mind about what might happen to dreams deferred as shown throughout the poem. Most poems are statements, although this particular poem asks more questions. “What happens to a dream deferred?” (1), “It dries up”, (2) “like a raisin in the sun”, (3) “Or it rots like a plague -”, (4) “And then it runs away?” (5) Does it smell like rotten meat?” (6) "Or crust and sugar on top -", (7) "like a syrupy dessert?" (8), “Or does it explode?” (11)While lines 9 and 10 presuppose what the speaker thinks would happen to a dream deferred. The ending of the poem is perplexing. What would you say happens to dreams?
