Health care for the poor in the United States can provide information that can be useful in Haiti's public health crisis. Specifically, the inequities and poverty that poor people face in the United States may provide a framework for Haiti's public health crisis. Farmer explains how medical care can be expensive for poor Americans, especially since there have been numerous advances in biomedicine that make care quite expensive. If poor Americans cannot afford access to care, then it is almost impossible for Haitians to also enjoy quality care. In the United States, tuberculosis is common in homeless shelters and prisons, which tend to be crowded areas. In Haiti, tuberculosis is also common largely because families tend to live together and interact frequently with each other (e.g., Annette Jean and her family). Since there are commonalities in both the United States and Haiti, Haiti's health crisis could be resolved by applying strategies that allow poor people in the United States to access quality health care.
