Primary Public Benefit Area: Reduced DisparitiesSecondary Public Benefit Area: Improved Service DeliveryLocated in North Portland, Roosevelt High School is located in the heart of the St. Johns neighborhood. Much like the community, the school is experiencing something of a renaissance with aspirations of building a thriving community school with a strong core curriculum grounded in a commitment to personalizing learning for all students. The staff, students and community of Roosevelt, which recently received a significant state grant for school improvement, have worked diligently over the past 18 months planning and implementing a transformation model (see Appendix XX for specific details) with significant technological issues that will ultimately reshape the school and community. With this emphasis on technology, ensuring students have access to essential tools and resources when they need them is essential. For the student population of the North Portland community this has been and continues to be an ongoing challenge and a real obstacle to effective engagement in the current educational model and absolutely essential as we look forward to an education system and a world where access will be guaranteed. intrinsically linked to success. To give you an idea of the challenges currently facing this population, only 42% of families, 296 of 694, have self-identified email addresses in the student information system. National data also suggests that the number of those with access to the internet at home is well below that figure. Additionally, we have a student population where nearly 80% are participating in the free and reduced lunch program, 68% are minority-identified, and, most concerning, only 37% are completing… middle of paper ....will also get national attention with our migration to Live@edu scheduled for July 2011 and will effectively move messaging (email, calendar, chat, etc.) to a cloud-based service hosted by MicroSoft. With every student having a mobile device this gives us greater flexibility in how students access and consume content. As the Ed Box evolves and students' capabilities with these mobile devices expand, we are now afforded greater instructional flexibility and opportunities to further personalize and tailor individual learning experiences with heavily data-driven themes. Online learning becomes the norm, and for students needing to recover credits or access courses not available at Roosevelt, access is no longer a significant factor. Virtual learning will generate growth in eBooks, educational innovation, and collaborative and learning communities.
