Topic > One Day in the Life of Ivan by Alexander Solzhenitsyn...

This assignment is based on One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Through a creative approach, I will demonstrate some aspects of Solzhenistsyn's text. I'll insert a scene where Shukhov, the protagonist, is sitting outside and adjusting his boots. This text is filled with a myriad of literary techniques and symbols, but the purpose of my piece is to specifically demonstrate the stylistic characteristic of the time, two of the three narrative styles, and some symbols through the above scenario. First published in 1962, this work depicts Stalin's Forced Labor Camps through labor camp inmate Ivan Denisovich, Shukhov, and his struggle to maintain his dignity in the face of communist oppression. This novel describes the lives of prisoners in a Siberian prison camp, in the post-World War II Stalinist era. The setting itself symbolizes the oppression of the Soviet government. The text style flows smoothly, although it was only illustrated one day. The entire story itself is focused on central features in a specific place and fixed time period. Although there is no time distortion, we have the impression that it takes place over more than one day and that it is symbolic of the daily survival of the prisoners. The time period seems longer than in reality and I will demonstrate this through my piece, in which only a small action takes place, but the time frame in which it is contained seems longer. There are three narrative styles present in this text. One style used is 'skaz', a variation of the traditional Russian narrative form, in which there is an anonymous narrator who is on the same intellectual level as the protagonist but gives the impression that the story is... middle of paper. .....If I compile my piece the same way Solzhenitsyn did, I will show the stylistic feature of time by making the reader feel that the action took place over a longer period of time than in reality. I will incorporate the polite and omniscient narrative perspective of the "skaz". The 'skaz' will allow me to be at the same level of education as Shukhov, but not Shukhov himself. Educated and omniscient narrative will allow the author's opinions to be displayed. I will show the three symbols mentioned above in my piece with emphasis on them. The setting will, of course, be in prison, but outside, since the inmates spent most of their time outdoors. This will allow Shukhov to interact with the external environment. I will demonstrate all the above features of Solzhenitsyn's novel through an ordinary scene from the life of an ordinary man.
