At North Branford High School, the emphasis is on positive attitudes. Attitudes are evaluative, meaning that our feelings toward people, particularly events and places, are necessarily positive or negative. The way NBHS does this is through PBIS, which is a national movement that stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. Because of the positive attitudes students display toward each other, they contribute to citizenship in classrooms, hallways, and the cafeteria. The simple exposure effect means that the more someone is exposed to something, the more they will come to like it. This is evident in NBHS in how students maintain integrity. For example, in a trigonometry lesson, students were copying a test regarding radians in the unit circle; another student wrote a note to the teacher because when he finished, he witnessed this problem occur. That student didn't need to tell the teacher about this incident but felt it was the right thing to do. This is similar to taking responsibility. Over the years students attend North Branford High School, they take responsibility for monitoring both their words and their actions. Overall, one of the reasons for this is the self-fulfilling prophecy. The self-fulfilling prophecy says that the expectations we have of others can influence how those others behave. For example, if I am told that Mr. Cronk is not a good teacher, when I have Mr. Cronk as a teacher for Contemporary Issues, I will believe that he is not good based on what I expected. NBHS students, however, expect other students to clean the bar if they drop food; this reflects the “leave no trace” responsibility guideline on the CIRCLE charter. Consideration is also an important characteristic of NB...... half of the paper ...... is not doing well in one class, others will offer both comfort and support. Often students also offer themselves as tutors in this type of situation. An example of this is how one of my friends wasn't doing well in Spanish and I offered to help him during X-block. In the next available X block, we will study the material and review it before the cumulative test. The mission of the North Branford School System, a proud and caring community, is to prepare all students to be capable and confident lifelong learners who are responsible citizens in a diverse and changing world by providing a comprehensive and challenging program in collaboration with family and community. As part of the mission of NBPS, NBHS developed the CIRCLE Expectations to provide a rigorous environment for students as lifelong learners and that challenges students to lead with civic and social responsibility.
