Almost everyone knows someone with a genetic disease. An aunt, a daughter, a friend, a colleague, every body is susceptible to having a genetically based disease. There are many types of genetic diseases ranging from skin deformities to life-threatening heart problems that could cause death. Genetic diseases affect newborns “Of the 3-6% of newborns with a recognized congenital defect, at least half involve a predominantly genetic contribution.” (Fridovich, Fridovich-Kelly &Robinson, 2013, p.1); however there are other diseases such as cancer or AIDS that occur throughout an individual's life and a large percentage of people are affected. That is why many scientists have been looking for a solution to these problems that affect so many people. Somatic cell gene therapy is the best treatment to cure genetic diseases. Somatic cell gene therapy, or cell replacement gene therapy, is a treatment that involves modifying or restoring the function of a gene that is not working properly or at all. It is a way to correct gene mutations as well as insert or delete a gene within the DNA. Somatic cell gene therapy is the best treatment because it cures genetically based diseases. There are not many solutions to problems based on genetics. For example, let's say someone has severe combined immunodeficiency (ADA-SCID). People with this disease have no protection against bacteria, viruses, and fungi and are “prone to repeated and persistent infections that can be very serious or life-threatening” (NA, ADA deficiencies, 2013). ADA-SCID is a very rare disease affecting approximately 1 in 200,000-1,000,000 newborns worldwide and for this reason there are not many treatment methods. The only known therapies for this genetic disease, so far... are in the middle of the paper......a new gene and it has a successful trial. Lately there have been a large number of clinical studies researching how many diseases are curable through somatic cell gene therapy and how many other therapies can be refined. Somatic cell gene therapy is still in its early stages. Recent progress has been made through the discovery and engineering of nucleases. Additionally, understanding how the techniques work and what factors, such as temperature or altitude, affect DNA cutting advances this field of science. As well as researching what types of enzymes work best for each type of genetic manipulation. Once these researchers master gene therapy, treating these patients with genetic diseases will not only be easier, but also cheaper and more available, making somatic cell gene therapy the best cure for treating genetic diseases..
