In this assignment I will use content analysis to research how the Volkswagen emissions scandal was reported in 2015 by the international press. First, I will start this assignment by introducing what content analysis is and discuss whether it is more qualitative, quantitative or whether I use both of these two, also I will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of content analysis. Secondly, I will discuss how I collect news, what term I used to search for news and how I analyze it and talk about the ethical approval of this project. Finally, I will present my findings and provide a reflection on my content analysis, such as how I can improve my content analysis. First, I will introduce the method I am using in this assignment, which is content analysis. Content analysis is “the systematic analysis of the content of a text in a quantitative or qualitative manner” (Bhattacherjee, 2012, page 115). In our MS7400 lesson we know that content analysis is a research method always used in social sciences, it is a way of measuring things, also it asks questions to texts instead of asking people, it is also a way to find the truth in the world (Mendes, 2015). Content analysis is a tool and technique that allows you to analyze texts in an objective and systematic way. It is very close to mass media such as newspapers, television, etc. Since it is a way to obtain objective data from these, it is also a method that shows the vastness of these media (Rose, 2012). Then I will talk about the fact that content analysis can be used as both quantitative and qualitative analysis. In this task you will use both. Qualitative analysis is to analyze the qualitative data such as some data collected from the interview, some literatures and...... half of the paper... ignored, that means I can find different sources identified and I can know who is interviewing more and whose opinions are not shown for this issue. The last question I asked is what is the general tone of the story because by asking this question I can know that this news is in support of an issue, against an issue or neutral, so I can know different attitudes from different countries, people , organizations, etc. I asked these questions because I try to get data from different newspapers about who is blamed for this scandal and who talks about Volkswagen emissions scandal and who is against this scandal and I can also know the consequences Volkswagen will face after this scandal. . For the coding scheme I first asked these questions and then created a sheet listing all the articles and their information (coding sheet) and listing all the answers to these questions (coding key).
