In the books A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen and The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, the main characters experienced similar circumstances in their story. Nora Helmer, the protagonist of A Doll's House, is the famous wife of Torvald Helmer. Nora is protected from living her life and guided by her husband who makes decisions for her as if she were a doll. She often neglects the reality of her life with the wealth and materialistic things her husband offers her. She is very intelligent, but rarely thinks for herself. Gregor Samsa, the main character of The Metamorphosis, is a miserable street vendor forced to provide for his family. Gregor has taken on the task of paying off his father's entire debt due to the failure of his business. As a result of his hard work, he provides a roof for his mother, father and sister. He is considered everyone's sole provider and caretaker with his limited finances. In their separate novels, Nora Helmer and Gregor Samsa experienced similar circumstances that include physical changes, unpaid debts, and isolation from their families. To begin with, Nora and Gregor have suffered similar circumstances which include their physical change. When talking about physical change, personality, appearance and attitude are taken into consideration. The title “A Doll's House” describes the character of Nora Helmer. Nora is known for being Torvald's doll. Control his every move and lifestyle. Like a doll, he takes orders from everyone and never takes his inner feelings into account. At the beginning of the novel, she does not mind her doll-like personality where she is pampered, spoiled, and humiliated. Towards the middle of the novel, Nora realizes that she is seen as Torvald's "stupid girl" and... middle of paper... Nora Helmer and Gregor Samsa have practiced similar circumstances which include their physical changes, unpaid debts and isolation from their families. Nora and Gregor were trying to escape the controlled society they lived in. Nora was controlled by her "impeccable" husband and Gregor was attached to the responsibilities he had to fulfill to his family. Ultimately, they both escape the dominant society towards the end of their novels. Gregor fled the society that controlled him by separating himself from his human qualities so that he could not fulfill his duties. This forced his family to take control of the situation and stop depending on Gregor. Nora has escaped mainstream society by taking a stand for what she believes in. She was tired of being portrayed as if she couldn't live life for herself. She leaves Torvald rediscovering her spirituality as an inner woman.
