In a study conducted to better understand color blind racism, researchers find that “racism arises not from the hearts of “racists” but from the fact that dominant actors in a racialized society receive benefits at all levels (political, economic, social and even psychological), while subordinate actors do not." (Bonilla-Silva, Lewis and Embrick 558) In the modern era, it is common to hear phrases like: "Slavery ended a long time ago ”. or: “I didn't own any slaves.” or, “Jews succeeded, why didn't blacks?” (Bonilla-Silva, Lewis, and Embrick 562) Many people believe that society should not treat any race differently because of what has happened to that group in the past, no matter how horrible. This is wrong because the black community is still not recovering from past atrocities while fighting modern racism and discrimination. Indeed, some whites believe that programs designed to enfranchise African Americans could be considered “reverse discrimination.” When asked whether blacks should receive any reparations for past atrocities, one respondent said, "[Slavery] doesn't affect you. I, as a white person, had nothing to do with slavery. You, as a of color, you've never experienced this. It's been so long that I don't understand how this has anything to do with what's going on at the race today, so... I say, "God, shut up.""!""
