ThesisThe importance of the Canadian Library and Archives is the preservation of Canadian history. Introduction Without the protection of the Canadian Library and Archives, vital documentation of the Canadian History Act could be lost. The significance of the Library and Archives of Canada is that it contains all the important documents on which this country was built, including the constitutional laws and all past and current amendments made. Library and Archives Canada also contains the census of Canadian citizens since 1871 in their database, as well as a military history. Basar (2005) states that the documents collected had to be, obviously, of national and historical importance. For the most part these documents were on paper, especially in the early years. Therefore, the documents began to appear later in diverse media and were collected with the same dedication and importance. (p.193)Documents like this are significant regardless of the format they arrive in; they define Canada and educate citizens about how Canada got to where it is today, whether through recorded documents, art, stories or music. Library and Archives Canada holds Canada's history within its walls and its database, meaning it holds pertinent information for generations to come. Not only databases are provided, but also electronic collections, virtual exhibitions and research aids. If it were not for Library and Archives Canada, the society would not have access to the materials it has now, nor would it have the ability to research its own country's history beyond that of its own family.
