The objective of this document is to analyze the fundamentals of the residential construction sector, externalities and its cyclical history by evaluating macro-environmental threats and opportunities; define products and markets; outline capabilities and competitors in the residential construction industry; describe the five forces of competition; and identify the key success factors for this sector. This analysis will use two of the four major U.S. homebuilders, Lennar and PulteGroup, to help better understand the industry. While these two companies have opposing approaches to standard features, land and inventory strategy, and operational focus, both have demonstrated the ability to overcome the deepest and darkest real estate crisis our country has ever seen and continue to target in the construction activity segment effectively. We will examine these differences and offer strategic recommendations for profit sustainability regardless of time within the cycle.
