Topic > ||When scientists discovered that stem cells could be used to repair the human body, they sparked one of the biggest controversies of all time. Stem cells are cells discovered in the human corpse that contain the ability to produce identical copies of themselves over long periods of time. Stem cells are different because they can work to specialize into blood, brain, tissue and muscle cells. Stem cells have the ability to advance the field of medical care in numerous ways. There are two main types of stem cells called adult and embryonic. Both types are classified based on their potential to differentiate into other cell types. Adult stem cells come from children and adults. Adult stem cells can only transform into a certain amount of other cells. They can, however, divide forever, allowing them to produce a wide range of cell shapes. The embryonic cells come from a five-day-old human embryo that is in the blastocyst stage of development and are usually extra embryos from in vitro fertilization (IVF). They have the ability to specialize in approximately two hundred different cell types. Furthermore, in many tissues they can constitute a sort of internal repair system, separating basically without any constraints to fill other cells only if the object is still breathing. Each new cell has the ability to remain a stem cell or become a different type of cell with a more particular role. Stem cells are different from other cell types because they are not specialized cells that can regenerate through cell division. Adult stem cells live in the human body after embryonic development and are found within different types of tissues. These have been discovered in tissues such as the brain, bone marrow, blood, blood vessels, the skeleton... half of the paper... there's more to experiment with, but embryonic stem cells are more flexible. The main issues concern opposition to stem cell research. People believe that research on embryonic stem cells should be avoided. Scientists have been conducting research for twenty years, but there have been no improved treatments or human trials. Side effects of embryonic stem cells include the production of malignant tumors and carcinomas, rejection of transplants, and the formation of the wrong types of cells. The need to collect a woman's eggs for embryo research increases the risks associated with cancer, infertility, memory loss, stroke, seizures and death. The research raises the likelihood of increased commercial exploitation of women to harvest their eggs. Ronald DG McKay believes that many people believe in stem cells because they need a fairy tale or a shred of hope.
