I must first begin by saying that I believe that God has a universal church, the church of God. “The Church of God in Name Only” is an effort to criticize those who profess a lofty claim, but fail to live up to that claim. In my opinion, many of those who profess to be God's holy people are not, because the Scriptures deem such individuals to be ungodly. These people are not the Church of God. To understand the reasoning behind such an argument one must already have a general idea of the standard of the Church of God. I will not go into detail regarding the following topics. The Church of God teaches justification, sanctification, oneness, divine healing eternity, modesty, trinity, and various doctrines. However, this same institution fails to live up to its own claims regarding some of the core doctrines. Holiness simply means freedom from sin and sinful affections. Sanctification is the act of consecrating or setting apart for a sacred purpose. Unity is the state of being one. Evidence will show that the lives of many professed Christians fall short of the standards they teach. It is easy for the Church of God to condemn the religious world. Most denominations outwardly teach a standard that is not biblical. For example, many ministers, of various affiliations, teach that one cannot have power over sin or the flesh. As a result, participants in God's Church feel justified because they understand that such teaching is wrong. However, if the Church of God were to be judged solely on the basis of its claims, regardless of the religious world, what would we find? Is the message of God's Church producing a people who are holy and manifest the power of God in signs through faith? As it should be...... middle of the paper ...... and the Church of God, and must, pass judgment on every sin, engage in a policy of zero tolerance towards worldliness, move souls to complete consecration and forcefully underline what it truly means to be Christian. In order for God's Church to make these necessary adjustments someone must have clout. In these last days God needs men and women to seek God with a heavy burden. In the words of E. Faith Stewart, “if we get where we need to be, then the morning glory will be ours.” My sincere hope is that God will find some ships willing to go down where they need to be. God has a people, but they may need to abandon their own groups, their own ideas, and their own followers, so that God can have a beautiful Church of God that is one and complete in Him. The Church of God cannot be the church of God only in name, but it must be the church of God in reality.
