Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the role of religion has been slowly diminishing in societies. With the rise of science and logic, more and more people are turning to logical thinking instead of turning to a religion. Scientists argue that there is no evidence of the existence of a God or other signs of a higher power. Secularization has made its way into all societies and the main concern is the struggle between religion and science. After reading philosophers and scientists, it is easy to understand why religion is gradually being eliminated from societies. According to Webster's Dictionary, secularization is the act of eliminating religion from (something). Although religion is still an important part of some people's lives, and for many communities it is a central idea, there seems to be a clear argument for the secularization of more advanced societies. Before the idea of secularization was introduced, people turned to religion for all the answers. Instead of seeking a more worldly explanation to life's questions, people turn to religion. When science was proposed to solve people's previously unanswered questions, the idea of secularization really began to impact society. Why turn to a priest or a witch doctor to cure a sick person, when turning to a real doctor would have proven to have better results. Why ask a hippie what sex your baby will be instead of getting an ultrasound. For some people this idea represented a real change in their life, because they now had a new way of looking at life. It was only when philosophers began to take a step against religion that the world began to divide their ideas. The job of a philosopher is to look at life in a different way than most people. They take into account everything... at the center of the paper... what we are today. Instead, He created us in His image and fashioned us each individually (Miller 8, 222). The theory of secularization across societies is, in small doses, correct. People are turning to a secular form of life as they continue to grow. The separation of church and state ensures that religion is not imposed on anyone, so that everyone can believe what they want. With the rise of enlightenment and science, advanced societies are rapidly turning to other forms of life besides religion. When Freud and Dawkins talk about the extinction of religion due to science, technology and philosophy, they are right in what they say. Looking at the United States today, the numbers alone demonstrate that America is becoming a more secular nation. Given that 20% of Americans no longer have any affiliation with religion, there is a correlation between societal progress and secularism.
