Topic > Choices in The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost and John...

"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and "A & P" by John Updike are two works that incorporate the use of your personal choice to make decisions that will impact your life. life. The stories show the luxury of having the ability to make your own choices. Both stories contain themes of personal choice, I believe the decision Sammy makes gives readers a better understanding of the impact you have with your choices. In “The Road Not Taken,” the theme is personal choice. The poem begins with a man faced with a decision to make. Two roads and only one man to travel them. When someone is faced with two options, they normally evaluate them. Maybe doing the pros and cons between the two choices. This is exactly what the narrator does, it is stated "And he looked at one as far away as he could." The speaker is looking at what this path has to offer before going to look at the other one. It turns out that the roads "had indeed worn more or less the same", meaning that the routes were taken or chosen in the same way. The poem shows that he thought he would have another chance on the other road. Therefore, if this were true, personal choice wouldn't matter as much if you had the option to repeat things once or twice. When the narrator says that he decided to take the road less traveled, this can show his character and personality. In the article "Frost's "Road" & "Woods." redux, Dan Brown states "Given the evidence, who's to say which road he hasn't traveled on" (12). This shows that perhaps he didn't even take a path and therefore he was the least traveled. His personal choice defines him Sometimes these choices can determine your destiny In "A&P" personal choice is one of the themes for... half of the paper...
