Topic > Macolm This man started out as a nobody and is now known around the world as one of America's greatest civil rights leaders. Malcolm X Little was the fourth child born to Reverend Earl and Louise Little. He also had 3 half-brothers. His father believed in self-determination and worked for black unity and tried to teach Malcolm the same. His father tried to educate Malcolm to be aware of his ethnic origin and his dignity. Violence has always been unleashed by whites trying to stop blacks like Rev. Little. (Malcolm's father) After his birth, his family several times before he finally settled in Lansing, Michigan. His father became active in the University Negro Improvements Assoc. he also becomes involved in the Black Baptist Church. Throughout his life Malcolm was dedicated to black people. I guess you could say he followed in his father's footsteps. Even though Malcolm, his brothers, sisters and parents were all killed, burned in their homes, harassed and threatened, they still fought for their freedom and what they believed in. This culminated in the murder of his father by whites. . When Malcolm was only 6 years old, his father was shot and died. Even though all of this happened to Malcolm throughout his life, he still continued to go to school. He graduated from eighth grade with good grades, just like he thought his father would have wanted him to. At the age of 15 Malcolm dropped out of school and began learning the ways of the streets. He met thugs, thieves, drug dealers and pimps. When he was twenty years old Malcolm was convicted of burglary and remained in prison until he was 27. While in prison he began to study on his own and learned about and joined the Nation of Islam. He thoroughly studied the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. In 1952 he was released a changed man. When he was released he went to Detroit and joined in the daily activity of the sect and received instruction from Elijah Muhammad himself. After Muhammad's teachings he changed his name to Al-Haji Malik El-Shabazz. His efforts helped build the organization nationwide, making him an international figure.
