Topic > A single mother with 2 young children - 1397

Laura is a single mother with 2 young children – Nathan is 5 and Colleen is 3 – she has a boyfriend, Julian, who is not the children's father. However, Julian states that even though he is not the biological father, he loves both Nathan and Colleen as if they were his own. After 2 years of relationship, Laura and Julian decide to get married, and after a year of marriage Laura becomes pregnant with Julian and has another daughter named Lilly. Five months after Lilly's birth, Julian's younger brother dies in a fatal car accident, and Julian becomes deeply depressed and seeks alcohol as a form of treatment for his sadness. As Julian becomes increasingly depressed and dependent on alcohol, he is fired from his job, unable to carry out his fatherly duties, and experiences mood swings of anger towards Laura. It's been more than 4 months since Julian was fired from his job and he has only fallen into an even more serious crisis. Laura is desperately struggling to not only provide for Nathan, now 8, Colleen, now 6, Lilly, still a baby at 9 months, and now Julian. Laura deeply understands the pain Julian feels over the death of his younger brothers, but is unable to support the family alone. Laura is at a crossroads whether or not to leave Julian with her 3 children and live with her parents or stay with him. As Laura's friend, she should definitely leave Julian. Julian has become emotionally dependent on alcohol and abuses it. Julian showed hallmark signs of alcoholism, such as drinking copious amounts of Corona and Bud Light beers, stronger liquors such as Jack Daniel's whiskey and Smirnoff vodka. Julian is known for starting... mid-paper... an alcohol detox program; however, rehabilitation facilities are too expensive for the family. The simplest and cheapest inpatient rehab program can range from $2,000 to $7.00 where patients live in a full-time facility while participating in a recovery program for 30 days. The program includes daily and nightly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, daily chores, intake, assessment, and 24-hour supervision (Brande). Laura doesn't want to break up the family; however, he has given Julian numerous chances to detox and get sober, but Julian relapses every time. Laura has spoken to Julian about his drinking habits and begged him to change his ways, but to no avail he can't stop. Unfortunately, Julian is too addicted to the drug to give it up for the sake of his family.
