“The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal” by Jonathan Mooney is the story of his journey across the United States on a short bus to meet several children and their families who have faced challenges in school due to ADD, ADHD, autism, and other learning disabilities. Jonathan Mooney himself faced the disability of dyslexia and often faced many challenges in school, but he seems to be one of the lucky ones, who managed to grow out of his disability and eventually get a degree in English. It goes without saying that his book and his journey lead the reader to question what “normal” truly is and how opinions about this have caused the odds to be stacked against those who don't fit the mold. Over the course of this story, however, for me personally, this story provided several events that I found moving and that had the potential to influence my further work in education. The question that Jonathan strives to define throughout the book is this idea of what "normal" is. I think this is a great question in relation to school. Many educators, as well as the system, are convinced that all children should fit into the same model of "normality" and that those who simply don't, like [the person in the book], are automatically classified as "learning disabled." , and are unknowingly discriminated against or placed on a different path than those who fit the mold. What I understood from this idea is that no one is normal and this is especially true when it comes to learning. Yes, there are children who have problems like ADD, ADHD and so on, but that doesn't make them any less capable. Even those who are in the mold of “normal” all learn in different ways, which makes the idea of “normal” impossible. Related to...... middle of paper ...... better than one's parents? That said, in my future teaching, even if I came across a student with learning difficulties, I would always make an effort to talk to the parents and see what they advised me, before deciding on my own or relying on an expert. the finale "The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Norma;", by Jonathan Mooney was very thought-provoking and raised many different aspects of how the education system may need to re-examine its approach towards those who suffer from learning difficulties such as l 'ADD /ADHD and dyslexia. I will take all of this into consideration in my future as a teacher. After all, even those who suffer from various learning disabilities still deserve the best education possible.
