Nursing is a profession that requires a unique skill set. Some of the traits include compassion, understanding, and empathy. Clayton State University has a mission to train professional, compassionate, and competent nurses with technical and communication skills. Clayton State's School of Nursing has outlined nine program outcomes or concepts that are part of the conceptual curriculum model. These concepts include caring, communication, critical thinking, human diversity, informatics, interdisciplinary collaboration, nursing therapy, professional development, and theory-based practice. These program outcomes relate to three transitions between nurse and client; health-illness transitions, evolutionary transitions and organizational transitions. In healthcare you need to be competent and advanced in many areas to provide efficient care; these concepts are the foundation for a healthy nurse-client relationship. Transition is the process of changing from one state to another. Transition is the core of the nursing discipline (Schumacher & Meleis, 1994, p.120). One particular transition listed in the conceptual curriculum model is health-illness. Health can be defined subjectively as a state of optimal well-being while illness can be defined as an illness that has a negative effect on the organism. Two of the four purposes of nursing are to promote health and prevent disease. To achieve these goals, a nurse will use knowledge, skills and critical thinking. (Taylor, 2011, p. 9). Health Illness can include acute or chronic illnesses (Murphy, 1990, p.3). There is a correlation between the disease and the results of the program. To promote health and prevent disease, a nurse must take care of patients,...... center of paper......at every step because one mistake can cause someone's death and there are no second chances or third tries once someone has left. Sufficient knowledge, skills and critical thinking skills are developed through experience and practice. Registered nurses become leaders through professional development. Nurses with a bachelor's degree will eventually fill leadership roles. We must evaluate the results of the program now to be successful when the time comes to fill these roles. I often refer to Dr. Tanner's quote that states, “Nurses have the power to make decisions to determine how patients are born, live, suffer, and die.” Some components of holistic nursing care are knowledge of growth and adaptation (Murphy, 1990, p.1). Nursing is holistic in nature, and nurses may not realize how much power they truly possess.
