How many people practice or celebrate traditions? I would say that each person has their own unique traditions but also shares multiple traditions with others. A tradition is defined as an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior (Merriam-Webster; 1828). Usually when you think of a tradition the idea revolves around a holiday. My initial ideas were Christmas, Easter or even Thanksgiving. I recognized a trait that each of these had in common, saying grace. Saying Grace is a highly respected tradition in my family. On each of the holidays mentioned above, along with others in between, we say grace during our meal before we eat. Growing up in a Christian home, I was taught to appreciate the importance of saying grace. As a Christian he is guided by the teachings of the Bible. By reading God's Word we are forced to act the way we do. For example, one of the best-known aspects of the Bible is the Ten Commandments. People of the Christian faith follow these commandments to live righteous lives. However, if you are familiar with these Ten Commandments, you know that saying grace or blessing a meal is not written in them. So where do Christians get the idea that they should say grace? As you study the Bible, you will read about various occasions showing gratitude to God for blessing people. An example of this is written in Matthew 15:36: “And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and having given thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples; and the disciples gave it to the crowd." Jesus did not want to send the crowds away without food because they had followed him for three days without eating. His disciples wondered where they would get enough food to feed them. Jesus took what they had, gave thanks and fed four thousand men with the leftovers. Of course, this may not be solely because He said thanks, but would it have been possible if He hadn't? Christians believe that God is the provider of everything. When you give something to someone, you naturally show your appreciation to the person who gave it to you.
