The power of choice revealed in The Road Not Taken Frost's passion for using nature and man's interaction with it to connect powerful Philosophical messages are expressed in his famous poem, "The Road Not Taken". “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost is a very powerful poem with an underlying philosophical theme: individuality boils down to the ability to choose between popular choice or social norms and a less explored choice. In other words, the central meaning of this poem is that one should not make a decision because it reflects popular opinion, one should make choices that are valid for the benefits they bring to the individual, because choosing a unique alternative could make a difference. What does Frost say you mean by "road less traveled by (19)"? Much of the poem suggests that Frost's use of the word "road" is metaphorical and not literal. “Road” as used by Frost refers to a decision or choice. However, using the literal application of roads, Frost shows that deciding which road to take will determine the outcome of one's journey, just as a decision will determine the outcome of one's goals and aspirations. Frost chooses to take the road that "was grassy and wanted to wear out" (8). Why? Clearly, like a unique idea, the road less traveled can lead to a different sense of fulfillment where only few men have been. Therefore, the “road less traveled” clearly speaks to Frost's personal striving to be different or unique. He didn't want to follow in the footsteps of conformism; that's why he takes the road less traveled. Frost alludes to the fact that a traveler cannot take two roads at the same time: he must choose between the two. The main reason for making this statement is to show that we cannot stick to two decisions about a particular goal in our life at the same time. As a result, we must carefully evaluate our decisions. Note Frost says “I took the one less traveled, / And that made all the difference” (19-20). What does this say about how we should make our decision? Clearly, this implies that we should not make our decisions based on popular opinions. In other words, we shouldn't make a decision because it works for everyone else; we should make a decision because it is right for our circumstances, because it could make a difference.
