Eva Peace's character in Sula In the novel Sula, there were other important characters besides Sula. The character in this book that I would like to focus on the most is Eva Peace. Eva is a woman who has a disability but remains strong, and this will be the focus of this article as it wasn't covered that much in the book. Eva is an amputee. There are many different theories as to how he lost his leg. Many say he may have cut it to receive insurance money and be able to feed his children. Other stories say that Eva sold her leg for $10,000.00 or that she stuck it under a train. Some people in town said he had a callus on his toe and it grew and grew, running all the way up his leg until doctors finally had to cut it off. Others told stories of how one day his leg just up and went away. No one was sure how Eva lost her leg and not many people in town remembered her with that leg, but everyone knew that Eva Peace was a very strong woman who knew what she had to do to survive. Her survival consisted of taking care of her children, making sure they had enough food. Eva was a single mother of three children. She was the matriarchal figure of her family, which consisted not only of her children, Pear, Plum, and Hannah, and Hannah's daughter, Sula, but also many others who stayed in her home. There were three little boys, all named Dewey by Eva, who had arrived at the house at the same time. Eva knew that if she called them all by the same name it would make them feel like they were equally loved and cared for. Such insults created a positive camaraderie between them. Also residing in the boarding house was a drunkard, Tar Baby, and several newlyweds. Eva kept the whole house under control. While the logistical theory of how he lost his leg was to feed his family, it didn't stop there. Eva did everything she could to protect her children. In one case he used the stump to maneuver himself so that he could jump out the window and save Hannah, who was literally on fire..
