Head injuries are very serious and dangerous. Some head injuries can cause neurological damage to the brain. They are commonly found in the world of sports, putting athletes at risk. There are many head injuries that are dangerous or could cause serious damage to the brain and, consequently, the body. For this reason it is necessary to adopt precautions, rules and guidelines to prevent and treat these athletes. If these things are not put in place, it could mean the difference between life and death for these athletes. There are many different injuries that can occur to the head and face. Facial injuries can be very dangerous as they can affect the eyes, nose and mouth. In 1976 in Scotland, approximately 100,000 people were admitted to hospital with a reported head injury. In the UK, according to hospital records, one million head injuries are reported each year. "Nearly half of these are children under the age of fourteen, and males outnumber females by more than two to one." (Graham). Deaths due to head injuries during this period would have been approximately nine deaths per one hundred thousand injuries. These are reports carried out before and up to 1976 and in the United Kingdom. More deaths or paralysis due to head injuries have been reported in American sports. In 1904, 19 athletes died or were paralyzed. In 1938, 894 deaths were thought to have been caused by head injuries in track and field (HIS). Theodore Roosevelt actually threatened to ban American football unless changes were made to prevent these injuries and deaths caused by the sport. Since then, sports-related head injuries have decreased dramatically (HIS). Many reasons for this major change in sports-related head injuries, mainly have to do with the protective equipment used and the regulation... middle of paper.... ..further damages the athlete's head or can cause paralysis. Whether it is a concussion or a hematoma, athletes should wear the appropriate equipment. This equipment will help prevent further injury and could save his life. For anything related to the face such as eye lasers, hyphema, or any oral lesion, face shields should be used. Masks/face shields and mouth guards will help protect your face. To protect yourself from head injuries, you should wear appropriate helmets. Head and face injuries are very dangerous and must be prevented. Head injuries can cause death or permanent damage to an athlete for the rest of their life. Facial lesions such as hyphema can affect an athlete's daily life due to decreased visual performance. This is why you need to wear safety glasses or goggles when playing a sport that involves small round objects. These injuries can be prevented.
