The works of Nathaniel Hawthorne attack the idea that women are the inferior sex. This can be seen especially in his novel The Scarlet Letter. The novel's protagonist, Hester Prynne, has a child out of wedlock and was forced to wear the "capital letter A" on her chest. By careful measurement, each limb was found to be exactly three and a quarter inches long. The narrator goes on to describe that the letter is "intended, no doubt, as an ornamental article of clothing" (22). The letter Hester is forced to wear is very similar to a Star of David during the Holocaust. It is telling that she has committed adultery and gives the townspeople permission to treat her like an outcast. This story alludes to the tales of both Pandora and Eve because it focuses on the sin and responsibility of women.
