In this book Beowulf is responsible for killing three monsters. Grendel, who is a demonic-looking man who kills for fun. Grendel's mother who lives in a den protecting her treasure. And finally the battle that kills Beowulf, the dragon. All of these battles take place in different settings and have their own unique attributes that make them special. Beowulf was a hero, he helped villages get rid of the beasts that plagued their land. Beowulf never fought any of his battles for riches or treasure, his motivation for fighting these monsters was for glory. Beowulf is the hero of the land and is fighting against all the evil that troubles the kingdom. The first monster that Beowulf must defeat is the ugly and vile creature Grendel. This battle rages on and he promises his son that whoever is responsible will pay. When Grendel's mother leaves the lake she is headed for Heorot. He is trying to find Beowulf so he can kill him. Beowulf is captured by Grendel's mother and she tries to kill Beowulf but cannot penetrate his powerful armor. As he takes him into the lake, the sea monsters destroy all the armor Beowulf had to protect himself. Beowulf tries to hit her head with his sword but fails to penetrate it. Beowulf suddenly remembers his reputation and begins to fight with his bare hands. As they fight, he sees an old ancient sword, this is the weapon he used to kill Grendel's mother. Beowulf notices that with each battle his strength is no longer what it once was. Nonetheless, Beowulf explores his cave and finds Grendel's body. He cuts off his head for further revenge. When he swims to the surface of the lake he is greeted with joy by all his warriors. When King Hrothgar is told of the battle, he praises Beowulf and tells him that he is a great, brave and honorable man. The village is at peace again and they celebrate like another monster did
