The end of West Side Story has Tony and Maria running towards each other after Tony returns from trying to break up a fight between the Jets and the Sharks. One of the characters runs after him and shoots him, just as he and Maria come together for a big hug. Tony dies in Maria's arms as she sings to him, and all the Jets and Sharks gather around them in silence. As heartbroken as Maria is, luckily she doesn't kill herself. She exclaims “you all killed him…not with bullets and guns; with hatred!” The guns did nothing, but what Maria means is that none of this would have happened if they hadn't hated each other so much. They could have lived in peace, and the same goes for Romeo and Juliet. Without feuding no one would have to get hurt or die, but since neither surnames nor different nationalities could be set aside, both parties had to suffer the
