As stated earlier, we live in a very individualistic society and people are often encouraged to do what is best for them. However, this does not apply to interracial relationships. For many, parental approval plays a huge role in interracial relationships. Those who tend to disapprove of interracial relationships are older and do not have a strong religious connection. In a study of college students' thoughts on interracial relationships, the majority of students said that their parents would disapprove of the relationship regardless of race, age, or gender (Fields 2013). In this same study males thought their parents would have a higher level of approval of their interracial relationship than females (Fields 2013). The fact that women experience greater disapproval in interracial relationships is not surprising because, as previously stated, parents have historically been expected to have parental control over their daughters' relationships. Interviews I chose my mother and grandfather for the interview because they had the strongest opinions and reactions to this family event and because they are both parental figures in my sister's life. From the interview I discovered that for my mother the main thing was class and not race
