King Henry's reign from 1399 to 1413 faced numerous tragedies. During his reign he foiled many assassination attempts, rebellions and plots to restore King Richard to the throne. He managed to avert these potential tragedies thanks to his well-trained and loyal army (wikipedia). King Henry was born on 3 April 1367 (wikipedia), in Bolingbroke Castle, as he was later nicknamed "Henry of Bolingbroke" (Wikipedia). He was born to John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancast, and Blanche of Lancaster (Britain). As a child Henry played with his cousin Richard the future king of England who Henry would eventually defeat (Wekipedia). Both were admitted to the Order of the Garter in 1377. Later in Henry's life he participated in the Rebellion of the Lords Appellant. After Richard regained power, he sentenced most of the rebels to execution or exile, but spared the life of his cousin Henry who would later return to haunt him. In 1389 Henry and Richard had a second conflict when Richard exiled Henry with his father's approval. Henry was banished to avoid a bloody clash with Thomas de Mowbray, the 1st Duke of Norfolk, who was exiled for life. The following year Henry's father, John of Gaunt, died and King Richard decided to abandon the legal documents so that Henry could return. Henry inherited all the land of Guant (wikipedia), because he was the eldest son. While King Richard was in Ireland on a military campaign, Henry was engaged in his own military campaign to oust Richard from the throne.
