Winston Churchill once said “It is a mistake to look too far. Only one link in the Chain of Fate can be handled at a time. Throughout the story of Oedipus Rex we see the ongoing theme of sight and blindness, not just in a physical aspect but in a more universal theme of trying to see and navigate one's destiny. King Oedipus Rex is a man who was told about his future by killing his father and sleeping with his mother. In “seeing” this he attempts to change what he thinks is true, when in reality he knows nothing and his blindness to this inevitably causes him to succumb to what is being predicted to him. Through the story we discover that Oedipus is not only blind to what is happening around him, but also to his ambition to find King Laius' murderer and even his own involvement in it. Sophocles plays with blindness and sight very vividly throughout the plot. The first irony of the story begins with the character of Tiresias, a blind prophet who predicts the future. The prophet knows what will happen and is forced to tell Oedipus the truth. After discovering that he himself killed King Laius, Oedipus becomes indignant and considers the prophet a blind fool whose other senses are as mute as his sight. “You blind, senseless, senseless, crazy old man.” (Davis 911). It is later revealed that not only Oedipus but all the characters in the play with sight are blind to the truth until the end. Thinking that Creon (the queen's brother) is behind what the prophets say, Oedipus blind to Creon's friendship and loyalty pursues him wanting to put him to death. It is only when Queen Iodate interrupts the fight that Oedipus backs down. Oedipus remembers killing some people in a situation similar to the one in which King Laius died... middle of paper ...... longing for the same parent of the same sex. Freud states that the decline of this complex occurs through the threat of castration for males and the desire for a child for females” (Rowell). Musical examples include "the End" by The Doors in which the singer claims he wants to kill his father and have sex with his mother. In media and films we see him make an appearance in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, where a power struggle erupts between son and father as Luke battles against the same-sex parent but, due to the death of his mother, he addresses his sister Leia as a forbidden person. love instead. Overall, I feel that the story of Oedipus Rex seems to portray that men can display great abilities of intuition and have a strong drive to acquire knowledge, but even the most intellectual person has the capacity to be wrong and that man's ability to acquire knowledge is inevitably very limited and unreliable.
