An abortion is the process of terminating a pregnancy through a medical or surgical procedure. (“Abortion” par. 1). Abortion was legalized in 1973 (“Abortion” par. 19). Abortions affect every person involved. The main people it affects are the mother and the baby (fetus). There are many issues involved in abortion such as; The medical issues that the mother and baby might face, the moral question of when life truly begins, and the question of whether it should be a choice for the mother to make. When having an abortion, women should realize that it can cause many medical problems. Some of the main long-term risks of an abortion for women who receive one are: death, several types of cancer, complications of subsequent pregnancies, and labor. Some immediate complications are: infections, excessive bleeding, hemorrhage, fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting ("Miscarriage Risks"). Death is one of the most serious long-term complications, “Legal abortion is said to be the fifth leading cause of maternal death in the United States (“Abortion Risks”). Natural causes, suicide, and homicide are known causes of death of women who have had an abortion. Depression can be caused by abortion which can lead to suicide. It is said that in the year following an abortion women are 60% likely to die from natural causes, seven times more likely. of committing suicide and a fourteen% greater chance of being killed ("Risks of abortion par. 2 and 5) Several types of cancer can also be caused by abortion. Those who have an abortion have a 2.3 times greater risk of developing ovarian cancer than those who do not have an abortion.
