There are thousands of people who own firearms in the United States. People have owned guns throughout American history. Even before the country was formed, there were Massachusetts minutemen who owned their own firearms and used them to defend themselves from oppression. Many legislators now want to go against these principles that allow civilians to own guns (Dreier 92). They want to challenge the freedoms that have transformed the United States into the nation it is today. They want to question the freedoms specifically promised to Americans in the Second Amendment of the Constitution. All legislators need to stop considering the effects that will come into play by creating gun control laws. Legislators should not pass gun control laws because guns provide protection to citizens, the absence of laws that infringe on liberty maintains trust in the U.S. government, and firearms allow Americans the ability to engage in traditional pastimes . Current legislators believe that any possession of firearms leads to grave danger because of the way they might be used. It has also been reported that since 2000, the majority of American citizens favor stricter gun laws (Dreier 92). These lawmakers look to the tragedies in Newtown, Connecticut and Aurora, Colorado. They realize that guns pose a legitimate threat to the security of the United States and the well-being of its citizens. While the safety and well-being of the American public is important, these lawmakers are taking the wrong approach in their protection efforts. Throughout American history, there have been weapons that have helped protect us. The soldiers who defended their country at the Battle of Lexington and Concord serve as… middle of paper… and much more attention and concern when the issue is something so controversial and controversial.
