Topic > Global warming and the Church - 916

The earth is warming rapidly and there are changes that affect everyone. Scientists have a large amount of data showing that global warming is widespread and creating many problems. Many tests have been done to calculate carbon dioxide levels and the earth's temperature in recent years. Global warming is causing many things to increase. Temperatures are rising due to greenhouse gases trapping light and holding it in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide levels are increasing due to various human activities. These different activities consist of the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. There are also natural causes that emit carbon dioxide, but the amount in the atmosphere due to volcanoes and other natural processes is low compared to human activities. Carbon dioxide levels have been tested over the past few years through bubbles in the ice and show that CO2 in the atmosphere has increased significantly over the past decade. Sea levels are also rising. As temperatures rise, ice melts in large quantities. Several landmasses such as Greenland and Antarctica are composed mostly of ice and are decreasing in size more rapidly than expected. While there is an increase in different levels, there is also a decrease in some things. The glaciers are retreating and diminishing. This decline is causing a loss of freshwater sources. Many water sources come from glaciers and now their source has almost disappeared. The snow on the mountain tops during the spring and summer decreased and almost disappeared. Both of these drops are due to rising global temperatures. Larger and stronger storms occurred. This change is due to the fact that the waters are warmer and there is a lot of paper... and they will only get worse if something isn't done. Is the Catholic Church responding to global warming and how do they feel about this issue. Church officials say the land is God's gift to us. With this gift we must respect it and not abuse the wonderful creation. The church has told us that we must take steps to preserve what God has entrusted to us. There are some things Vatican City is doing to do its part in the battle against global warming. Solar panels have been installed on one of the buildings to generate solar energy. Electric cars are also used instead of regular gas cars. This reduces carbon dioxide emitted from car fumes. Vatican City is doing something about all the carbon dioxide it produces. They planted a forest and in doing so it absorbs carbon dioxide. This clears the carbon footprint for Vatican City.
