In the early days, humanity relied on religion, and it played a crucial role in the formation of society. Organizing people before a leader helped guide the undisciplined masses to collaborate and coexist. However, humanity no longer needs hand-holding to overcome the dark times. At some point we must take responsibility for our actions, both personally and as a society. Religion has become the justification for countless murders, decades of war, and myriad other despicable acts. In the United States of America, it is used as a way to generate untold amounts of unregulated money, spread ignorance, and encourage intolerance. Although it has helped shape civilization as we know it today, religion is having a negative effect on society in the modern world and should be discouraged by people everywhere. One image can be found throughout history regardless of location: the sun. It can be seen by every human on the planet at least once a day. It is understandable that ancient humans revered the sun as each day would bring salvation from the elements of darkness. Over time, different cultures around the world have personified the sun, giving it all the qualities of God. The ancient Egyptians anthropomorphized the sun as Horus. Horus was born on December 25 to a virgin named Mary, and his birth was marked by an eastern star and three kings. He was a teacher from the age of twelve, had a ministry of his own by the age of thirty, and traveled with twelve disciples. Horus also performed miracles, was crucified and even resurrected after three days. All of this was set three thousand years before the birth of Christ. Horus is not the only one, in fact, throughout history the same series of myths has been repeated... in the center of the paper... achieve global unity or world peace with any institution that spreads ignorance, promotes violence and justifies intolerance. . While not all churches may fall into the category of corruption, the form of control they exert over a free, thinking mind is still harmful to us all. We should not try to force people to abolish religion. The repercussions of attempting to make the church illegal or criminalize it would ultimately do more harm than good. We should instead encourage people to think for themselves and hope that after a few generations the religious factions will die on their own. It is only then, when the last corrupt religious institution has vanished, that humanity can move forward and achieve a global civil society. While religion has helped get us to where we are today, it is only through reason and understanding that humanity will reach its adolescence.
