Introduction The last 50 years have seen a decline in road-related fatalities and accidents in Australia; however, there are still large numbers of people injured or killed in road accidents across Australia. Both the federal and state governments have developed and created strategies and operations to ensure a continued decrease in the statistics associated with road accidents and deaths in Australia. These strategies and operations have been able to ensure public awareness of the statistics, a decrease in road deaths and accidents in Australia and create a safer driving experience for Australian citizens. Compiling road accident statistics in Australia Since 1997, compiling road accident information in New South Wales has been a paperless system. Information relating to a road accident is uploaded into the computerized operational policing system which, once substantiated, is transferred to the road accident database system of the Center for Road Safety. There are automatic IT procedures both daily and nightly that guarantee that there are no irregularities or calculation errors in the data collected. In the case of fatal traffic accidents, a primary report is used to assist in compiling a fatal traffic accident database where people can analyze and monitor traffic accident information and statistics. Three organizations are involved and responsible for accumulating information on road accidents: Transport for NSW, Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCI) and the New South Wales Police Force (Transport for NSW, 2012). The Center for Road Safety (CRS) is the primary office responsible for the collection and distribution...... half of document......00 Australian citizens (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2014). Applying traffic accident statistics in any way ensures that every individual using these passenger vehicles can be safe; either through an operation to reduce drink driving (e.g. Random Breath Testing) or through the use of speed cameras and the application of double demerit points on public holidays (Roads and Maritime, 2013). It is a modern knowledge and application of mathematics and statistics that has made it possible to acquire knowledge and information and place it in the public domain. It has been instrumental in decreasing road fatalities in the 21st century; for example, while in 1970 there were 30.4 road-related deaths per 100,000 people, in 2009 there was a significant decrease to 6.9 per 100,000 people (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2013).
