Conflict management can often be the most difficult task for a leader to manage. It involves managing interpersonal and intrapersonal conflict. As a team leader of a tech event called Pulse'09 at my university, I faced conflict on a regular basis. Conflicts usually arise due to lack of effective communication, different ideologies, lack of resources, or task interdependence [3]. It was by far the most life-changing experience as it taught me the reason for conflicts and how to resolve them. In this article I will talk about how I approached and managed conflicts, the impact they had on team performance, and what I could have done to improve my leadership by comparing my experience with classroom readings. When I was elected Pulse'09 team leader, the feeling was insurmountable. If I knew the responsibilities that come with being a leader, I would definitely try something else. Every year a new team was elected together with its leader. Already in the first team meeting I realized the need to set a defined “goal” to give a sense of direction to team members. Additionally, I thought the best way to enjoy the Pulse'09 experience would be to divide the entire team into smaller groups focused on a particular task. In this way not only the final goal would be achieved effectively, but also the members could get to know each other closely. Therefore, after the first informal meeting I divided the team members into groups of three and assigned them specific tasks. The tasks were small objectives that individual groups had to accomplish to reach the final goal; which was essentially the success of Pulse'09. But what I didn't know was the criticality of... middle of the paper... that the task is divided among all team members. Standards will be formed and followed. Timings will be respected and productivity will be high. Furthermore, as a leader I will try to be accessible to ensure that team members share a comfort level with me and are able to express their views openly with me [1]. Being an effective leader will always remain a challenge in my life. opinion. But if you follow and incorporate the appropriate leadership style that suits what the situation requires [1], I am sure that the intended goal will be achieved with ease.
