Topic > Comparison between Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story - 544

In plays, as in real life, the actions of individuals can change the course of events in their lives, as well as those of other individuals. In both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, lovers were forced to take their own lives or be killed due to each other's fate and actions. In Romeo and Juliet, a character who is partly responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet is Tybalt. Tybalt infuriates Remeo and has him kill Tybalt. In Romeo and Juliet this leads to Romeo's exile from Verona. If Romeo had not been exiled from Verona, he would have known of Friar Laurence's plan to prevent Juliet from marrying. If he had known about the plan, he would not have gone to the vault and killed himself over what he thought was Juliet's corpse. In West Side Story, a character with a similar role to Tybalt is Bernardo. In West Side Story, killing Bernardo enrages Chino to the point that he pulls out a gun and searches for Tony. While trying to protect Tony from Anita, Bernardo's girlfriend, they make her extremely angry and tell her that Maria is dead. After hearing this, Tony leaves the pharmacy in search of Chino. When Tony finally finds Maria, Chino kills him. None of this would have happened if Bernardo hadn't fallen out with Tony and been killed. Another character responsible for the death of the lovers in Romeo and Juliet is Lord Capulet. Knowing that her father would not agree with her marriage to Romeo, a Montague, Romeo and Juliet were forced to keep their love a secret. At the beginning of the play, Lord Capulet tells Paris that Juliet is still too young to court and that she should wait two years. However, later in the play, he tells Paris that Juliet will be married to him in two days. After learning that she will be married in two days, Juliet goes to Friar Laurence asking for help. If Lord Capulet had not forced Juliet to marry Paris, he would not have had to fake her death. Friar Lawrence's plan to prevent the wedding led to the death of Romeo and Juliet. An additional West Side Story character who is partly responsible for Tony's death is Agent Krupke..
