The Life and Music of Louis ArmstrongAmong the most famous and revered musicians of our time, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong brought a musical presence, technical mastery, and imaginative genius that "so overwhelmed musicians of his day who became their main model, leaving an indelible mark on the music" (Kernfield 27). When examining Armstrong's work, his years with us can be divided into two aspects, his personal life and his music. In addition to providing significant insight into Armstrong's life, his article will also introduce and explain the impact he had on music and the world of jazz. Born on July 4, 1900, Armstrong was born in a cabin in a dilapidated black slum in the Back o' Town section of New Orleans. Armstrong's father was a factory worker named Willie Armstrong, and his mother a housekeeper and most likely a part-time prostitute named Mayann. Soon after her birth, her father abandoned the family and her mother decided to move to an area of the city reserved for black prostitutes. Armstrong had no choice but to live with his grandmother, Josephine, until he moved back in with his mother after she moved to Storyville a few years later. At the time, Storyville was a tacky, run-down neighborhood or “brothels, cribs, seedy dance halls, and honky-tonks frequented by black workers and some whites” (Kernfield 27). At such an early age, Armstrong was poorly cared for by his mother and spent much of his early years in severe physical, mental, and emotional deprivation. Although his early life may have seemed harsh and difficult, he grew up listening in dance halls and clubs to what was then blues and the hot new music emerging from the ragtime musical period (Kernfi...... middle of paper ...the world's first international jazz icon As a man who worked hard to continually improve, Louis Armstrong practiced daily for nearly fifty years of his life, and came to have a style all his own. He possessed a special skill on the trumpet and cornet, and his vocal abilities were no downfall. Armstrong's successes as a musician and as a person revealed to the world a unique and talented gentleman, who spent his life improving himself as well. his passion. as the development of a musical genre into a more complex and advanced musical style.
