As my senior year progresses, I begin to think about what I want to do with my life. Where do I want to go? Where do I want to end up? What is the best option for me? I want to make the best decision for myself. Creative writing or theater arts. In this essay I will compare which major is better for me, theater arts or creative writing, analyzing what degrees are offered, career opportunities and what courses I need. For a theater arts major, the classes are all different. According to the Stephens College Undergraduate Curriculum Catalog for 2016-2017 (2017): “The minimum credits for a Bachelor of Fine Arts are 120 semester hours, of which 36 must be upper-level courses. The BFA requires one summer spent at the Summer Theater Institute and another at the Okoboji Summer Theatre, six production crew assignments in three years, and two strikes per semester. (p.183) Courses offered specifically for theater majors are also listed in the Stephens College Undergraduate Curriculum Catalog for 2016-2017 (2017), “THA 251: Costuming (1.5 hours)” “THA 421: Acting advanced I - Shakespeare (3 hours)” (p. 183. Par. 4-6) I also sought to further my education beyond the BFA or BA offered in theater and found information on If I Had a Choice, It Would Be in Playwriting. The Stephens College 2016-2017 Curriculum Catalog (2017) provides the list of required classes for a creative writing major, ranging from “3 hours of introduction to narratives” to “6 hours of English literary traditions and global literature. As for opportunities, Prepscholars Blog “Should You Major in Creative Writing?” (2015) states: “Workshops can be very productive as they provide the opportunity for numerous revisions and rewrites.” (Heimbach, A. para 12) Also, according to the Dornslife, Ph.D. FAQ on the Creative Writing and Literature (n.d.) page that a creative writing major should plan to spend up to 5 years to complete it
