Topic > Nuclear Energy Problem - 3143

Nuclear energy is a source of energy. The story begins on November 8, 1895. A man named Wilhelm Rontgen discovered this in his laboratory, when he saw a luminescent screen near a cathode ray tube. (Jeffrey Vohlers). Nuclear energy could be a good or bad thing, it could solve many problems, but also give rise to new ones. One of the biggest risks associated with nuclear energy is nuclear fusion. This is very serious because it could damage the water supply. The issue being addressed is the impact of nuclear energy on the environment. Nuclear energy is the energy released during the process of nuclear fission or fusion; these processes are used to generate electricity. The problem with nuclear energy is that over the life of nuclear plants, greenhouse gases are emitted during construction, when uranium ore is mined and processed, and when waste is treated. Greenhouse gases emitted by nuclear energy can resort to the problem of global warming. Water vapor from nuclear reactors can cause global warming because the vapor increases the temperature of the Earth's atmosphere which causes the Earth to become warmer and increases the possibility of precipitation and clouds. Carbon dioxide is also emitted during the life cycle of nuclear plants. During its life cycle a nuclear reactor emits sixty-six grams per kilowatt hour of electricity. Nuclear energy emits more greenhouse gases than renewable energy, for example biomass produces forty-one grams per kilowatt hour. (Killie) Nuclear energy has been producing energy for several decades in America. The existence of global warming has been around since the 1800s, but became more apparent during the 1950s. The first nuclear reactor was Chicago Pile 1 (CP-1...... middle of paper...... nuclear.org.
