Gained respect solely by being a warrior and defeating an undefeated fighter known as "Amalinze the Cat". All he wants to make sure is that he is seen as a strong and proud man, with no match for his father (Unoka). Similar to Goneril, Okonkwo also does not have a good relationship with his father. In fact, he disgusts his father for the simple fact that he was lazy, cowardly and extremely feminine. This is evident when Achebe states: “In his time he was lazy and improvident and was quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow” (Achebe, 3). His father also borrowed money several times from others and left debts when he died: "Unoka was, of course, a debtor, and owed money to every neighbor" (Achebe, 3). Due to Unoka's failures, Okonkwo had to suffer to ensure that he did not follow in his father's footsteps, even though it led him to make some rash decisions that affected his life.
