"You, Dad?" He forgot for a moment that he was not at the precinct, but with his mother and son in the kitchen. He looked to Kate for help, but the detective found the situation rather amusing, and so did his mother. “Well, you know… why am I always warm?” He said, though it sounded more like a question than a statement. “Oh, okay,” Alexis said, believing his improvised lie. His mother greeted him with her glass of wine, as if saying 'all right, boy.' Rick refocused on his task at hand, lowering the stove's temperature and then placing the bacon. Surely, he didn't have to avoid getting oil burns. He looked at the detective, who looked too smug for his liking. "Sooner or later I would have understood." "You're welcome," Kate said smugly, making her mother laugh. While he finished cooking, Martha set the table with the help of Kate and Alexis. The two redheads sat down when they were done and Kate offered to help him put the food on the table. On the last trip to the table, Castle was fast enough to move the chair for Kate. The detective rolled his eyes at her antics, however he didn't miss the soft blush spreading across her cheeks. He sat down and started eating the pasta. Alexis sat next to Kate and excitedly told her about some activities she had done in kindergarten. “And then he asked me if I wanted to hold the hamster!” The girl finished her story. "And you?" Kate asked, genuinely interested in Alexis' story. The girl's innocence was refreshing, as most of Beckett's world dealt with the negative aspects of people. "Yes, but I didn't like it." Alexis said wrinkling her nose, making Kate smile as she looked at her adorable face. "Why?" He didn't notice the smile in the middle of the paper that said "don't open" and "how the hell did that happen." She couldn't believe that Castle was actually able to behave for more than 5 minutes. And she didn't want to think about the awkward goodbye with Castle. I had a great time, he repeated in a mocking voice in his head, what was wrong? "Hey Kate, wait. Your phone." Castle's voice brought her out of her thoughts, she saw him running towards her. Luckily the elevator door hadn't closed, so he put his arm so they wouldn't. "Thank you" He smiled, he had completely forgotten why he was there. She was sure there was some psychological explanation as to why she forgot, but she definitely wasn't going to look into it. She pocketed her phone and with one last look at Castle, the elevator doors closed and officially ended the weirdest, funniest moment she'd had in a while..
